Gift for those in Need

Reflections from the Red Kayak

"As every season seems best to us in its turn, so the coming in of spring is like the creation of Cosmos out of Chaos..."
Henry David Thoreau, Walden

The season of spring is a beautiful gift. A time when everything emerges from winter’s darkness to begin again. The frozen waves on the lake…

…and the tiny little “snow flower” on the shoreline…

…give way to the warmth of spring. Soon the bright green foliage and the open water will be welcoming us kayakers back to paddling season and the peacefulness of being on the water.

I have written about this feeling of tranquility in my books, and many of you have told me that my books provide a sense of calm, reading about being on the water and how it compares to our lives. It didn’t matter if you were a kayaker or not, so many of you seemed to relate.

So in the spirit of the gifts of spring and new beginnings, I began to think about our first responders, health care personnel and all the essential workers who have tirelessly worked through this pandemic. And continue to do so. They have been experiencing unbelievable circumstances that test the strongest of souls. But now, I believe they are beginning to emerge from this acute time of darkness. Like spring, they are hoping to somehow begin anew.

I wanted to do something to help these weary workers return to a place of calm, so a few weeks ago I sent some of my books to people I know in the health care system. I asked them to distribute them to their colleagues and anyone else they felt were deeply impacted by the events of this last year.  Perhaps reading an essay or two might bring a sense of healing. The books were distributed to personnel in ICU and Critical Care units, to staff at universities and front line health care professionals in Emergency Rooms. The books have been very well received, so I am now making the same offer to all of you.

If you know of anyone that you think might benefit from receiving a signed copy of my first book, Reflections from the Red Kayak: Thoughts on Life, please reply to me via email (marsmrz@comcast.net) by Sunday, March 28th with the following information:

  • Number of copies – Limited to 6 books
  • Shipping address – one location only

I will be shipping the books out to you once I receive them in April. I am hopeful that by sharing the calm and tranquility that I experience every time I go out in my red kayak, others might feel some peacefulness. There is no cost to you

Let’s collectively give back to those who have given so much.

Whose life can you enhance today with an unexpected gift?

How can we do a better job of acknowledging those who serve?

Giving and receiving are the same motion – hands outstretched toward each other. Who can you reach to today?
